Performance coaching for trainees - FAQs

My trainer has suggested referral to the CDU but I am worried that if I accept I will have a remedial label on my training record that might affect references and job chances. Can I refuse?
The Career Development Unit provides coaching for individuals at least half of whom are high flyers so there is no stigma attached to coaching at the CDU. As your trainer has suggested referral to the CDU she must feel you might benefit from the personal coaching, but it appears that you either disagree with her or do not understand what the CDU offers.

The coaching process will clarify the issues that your trainer is concerned about and give you an opportunity to describe your perspective. There will also be an opportunity for you to explore any contributory factors and be precise about what you need to do to get back on track.

By accepting referral to the CDU you are demonstrating a mature approach to a setback - making efforts to understand and accept feedback and showing motivation to learn and change. This is more likely to be a positive factor on your training record.

You can refuse but this may not be in your best interests.

I keep failing my exams and my trainer is giving me no help. I don't know where I'm going wrong and now my trainer has suggested referral to the CDU. If he can't help, how can you?
The CDU process involves your trainer and the CDU can facilitate a performance improvement plan where you get more supervision, feedback and exam/OSCE practice from your trainer, if that is what you need and suits your learning style.
