Managing performance: PCT responsibilities
It is the duty of each NHS body to put and keep in place arrangements for the purpose of monitoring and improving the quality of healthcare provided by and for that body.
A PCT is able to manage its responsibilities relating to the quality of healthcare provided by and for it via a number of mechanisms, including the management of Performers lists.
Management of the Performers List
Since April 2004, PCT's have been responsible for ensuring the quality of the workforce by managing their primary care medical Performers lists.
This covers admission of doctors to the list, removal or contingent removal from the list and disqualification for inclusion in a list.
Every GP, including GP registrars, locums and sessional doctors, have to be on a Performers list to practice legally within the NHS.
GP locums, who may work across the country, have to be on one PCT Performers list and it is that PCT which is responsible for the quality of the work they do, even if the actual work takes place in a different part of the country.
GP's who move permanently to another area of the country can apply to change from one PCT's Performers list to another.
