Interventions aimed to resolve problems may include the doctor participating in:
the videoing and review of consultations
PCT-based learning initiatives; these may be multidisciplinary 'protected time' sessions
participation in multi-practice audit
small group work with peer support
comparative practice information which enables practices to assess themselves in relation to peers
critical incident analysis.
Role of the Deanery

training placements. They may also be able to identify returner or
refresher training for those who have had a career break.
The GP Associate Director and/or the CPD tutor can give educational
advice and information about local arrangements for supporting the
development of GP's, including courses and workshops.
The Career Development Unit offers personal coaching and supervision for remedial training.

Help from RCGP
Thames Valley Faculty RCGP has set up a mentoring system for newly qualified GPs.
The RCGP offers a number of initiatives for both individual doctors and practice teams including:
Quality team development (QTD). This is designed to
help practice teams improve both their quality of care to patients and
their team working. QTD can support practices with difficulties by
providing a comprehensive picture of their needs and helping to develop
a practice development plan to which all staff are committed. External
evaluation of QTD has shown that it does help to improve the quality of
services, is a catalyst for change and improves team morale. More
information can be obtained from www.rcgp.org.uk
Quality practice award (QPA). This mark of excellence
recognises a high standard of patient care delivered by every member of
a primary health care team. The assessment criteria are shared with
those used for QTD, to enable practices to progress to QPA as their
quality improves. More information can be seen at www.rcgp.org.uk/faculties/scotcoun/qpa.asp.
Membership by assessment of performance (MAP). This route to
GP membership of the College by assessment of performance is designed
as a supportive tool for individual GP's to develop their services. Help
is provided by a local College advisor. Further details can be found at
www.rcgp.org.uk/map/index.asp.
