Orthodontist in Community Dental Service/Personal Dental Service
Over two years, three written complaints were received about PG, an orthodontist employed for one session as a specialist registrar, who also worked for another PCT and a Hospital Trust.
Concerns were also raised by the consultant at appraisal, as there had been queries from the laboratory about poor impressions, and PAR scores for this clinician were less than acceptable. Generally the performance of the clinician was poor. There was potential for litigation as a dissatisfied parent has taken their child to a private practitioner. The clinician had little insight into their own abilities and in self-audits scored themselves as 10.
The consultant discussed the matter with the Dental Dean who asked the Career Development Unit to provide personal coaching. The CDU coach worked with the consultant and the dentist in difficulty to identify the specific areas of concern and negotiate a performance improvement plan that addressed the issues. The CDU coach supervised the remedial process, ensured monitoring of progress and was able to write a progress review report demonstrating that the dentist in difficulty had passed the criteria for success against the objectives in the performance improvement plan.
The Dental Dean and the consultant were then able to assure the various employers that the issues had been addressed and they no longer had any concerns about competence.
