Performance: managing dentist performance

If an established dentist provides only private care, they are completely self employed, answerable only to the General Dental Council for the standard of their work.

Other established dentists are either:

• employed by AcuteTrusts
  
• on the performers lists of PCT's
  

Dentists whose performance gives cause for concern may:

• refer themselves or be referred to a local PASS scheme for guidance and support
• be referred to NCAS for an assessment of competence - see NCAS guidance
  

Established dentists may also make use of the Career Development Unit service. They may:

• refer themselves for personal coaching
  
• be referred by their Acute Trust or PCT
