Managing performance: acute trusts
Overview
For employed doctors and dentists in the NHS, the policy document Maintaining high professional standards in the modern NHS brings systems for doctors and dentists closer to the systems used to manage the performance of all NHS staff.
Medical and dental general practitioners are independent contractors to
the NHS but there are list management procedures for PCT's that bring
primary care systems closer to the systems used to manage doctors and
dentists in the rest of the NHS.
The NHS has procedures for dealing with 'conduct, capability and
health', while primary care uses the terms 'suitability, efficiency and
fraud', however principles are similar:
- Investigation should be objective and efficient
- Fair separation of investigating and decision-making roles
- The dignity of the people causing concern should be respected
- Certain information should be shared across the NHS to prevent concerns resurfacing elsewhere
- Solutions should be sought which make the most of strengths and don't focus solely on weaknesses.
