MMC Career Service: Oxford Deanery Draft Strategy
MMC -A Career Management Service
- Postgraduate Deaneries are expected to work with others to provide a comprehensive Career Management Service for doctors.
- MMC Working Group has produced a document Career Management - an
approach for medical schools, deaneries, royal colleges and trusts www.mmc.nhs.uk/download/Career-Management.pdf
The document outlines a career management delivery model with the following key elements (with lead responsibility in brackets);
1. Career and specialty information (Deanery)
2. Annual career conference with skills workshops (Deanery)
3. Career forum programmes (Medical School)
4. Career handbook / website (Deanery)
5. Online guidance (Deanery)
6. Peer group activities/career management workshops (Medical School/Deanery)
7. Specialist career planning tools/programmes (Deanery)
8. Focused experience (Medical School/Deanery)
9. Designated career adviser (Deanery)
10. Designated trained career contacts (Deanery)
11. Medical school support services (Medical School)
12. PG Deanery Guidance and Support services (Deanery)
13. Occupational Health and occupational psychology (Deanery)

The Deanery, Medical School, BMA and others already provide elements of the service as outlined.
14. The Career Development Unit provides 5,6,7,12,13.
15. Oxford Medical School provides 11,6
16. The BMA provides a limited version of 2.

The following strategy is suggested to develop a comprehensive career
management service in line with MMC guidance. The Career Development
Unit (Oxford PGMDE) will lead on this, working with the medical school,
the BMA and others such as the Occupational Health service.
1. Develop CDU website to include:

Local career and specialty information

Careers handbook

Online guidance

Specialist career planning tools
2. Careers conference Work with the BMA to develop the annual careers fair
3. Training in career advice for key personnel - Oxford College Tutors, programme directors, Clinical Tutors.
4. Career management workshops - incorporate into the medical school and foundation school educational programme.
5. Focused experience - develop opportunities for work experience/career tasters.
