Career guidance FAQs
I'm thinking of changing my job but I don't want anyone to know I'm getting career advice. Will you be contacting my trainer?
The provision of career guidance for any individual with a career dilemma is an entirely confidential service. If the action plan suggests it might be helpful to get advice from a third party then the individual doctor concerned must explicitly agree.
I would like to restart my medical career. I was a locum GP before I took a career break. My clinical confidence is shaky, can the CDU help?
There are clear arrangements for refresher training in general practice which involve either full time or part time training in a GP training practice. We suggest you contact the GP Director, Dr Simon Plint, in the first instance.
I've been abroad for several years, effectively taking a career break from the NHS. I would like to take up my medical career again and previously I worked as a consultant. Can the CDU help?
If you would like to return to work in the same specialty then you should contact the Regional Adviser in that specialty. However if you are not sure which specialty or area of medicine you are best suited to, then career guidance from the CDU may help.
I've not worked in the UK before and I live in India. Can I ask for career advice while I am in the UK on holiday?
Unfortunately the Career Development Unit can only provide a service for doctors who either work or live permanently within the Oxford Deanery.
I'm a consultant and need some help with problems within my department. Can I refer myself for career guidance?
Yes- although we are only funded to provide a service for doctors/dentists in training, at the moment we do provide the same service free for established doctors or dentists who refer themselves and wish their case to be confidential from their employer.
