Dr. John Derry, Director of the CDU

I graduated in 1979 (Oxford Medical School), planning a career in surgery. Experience of house jobs changed that and I joined the Oxford GP training scheme. From 1985-2002 I was a GP in Witney, initially full-time and then becoming increasingly part-time as interests in quality improvement, clinical audit and management roles developed.

Since 1999 I have been a primary care medical adviser, initially at Oxfordshire Health Authority, then with Thames Valley Strategic Health Authority, and now with Thames Valley Primary Care Agency in a part-time post. This role involves advising the PCTs in Thames Valley on managing GP contract and performance issues, and requires good knowledge of all the rules and regulations around GP services.

I joined the CDU coaching team in 2006 and was appointed CDU Director and Associate Dean of the Oxford Deanery in 2011.  In 2008 I was awarded a Masters degree in Coaching and Mentoring Practice at Oxford Brookes University, and I am an Associate Lecturer in the Business School, supervising students on their coach training courses. I am an associate member of the Association for Coaching and an affiliate of the British Psychological Society Special Group in Coaching Psychology. I am also an accredited member of the NHS South Central coaching register.

I'm committed to lifelong learning and personal development, and wish to use my own experience of an emerging portfolio medical and non-medical career to help others with their personal and career development.
